Positive ending to 32nd HISWA Amsterdam in-water Boat Show despite poor weather
Stunning Dutch skies, torrential rain and some serious gusts of wind provided a rugged setting for the HISWA Amsterdam in-water Boat Show 2015. The #1 in-water boat show in Northern Europe, which took place from Tuesday 1 to Sunday 6 September 2015 in Amsterdam, welcomed fewer visitors than previous editions. But although Friday was the stormiest day, the event still attracted plenty of interested people who helped ensure good results for most exhibitors. A successful final weekend with nearly 8,000 visitors brought the total number for the show to 20,093.
The weather did not keep interested visitors at bay. Various exhibited vessels were sold during the event, and exhibitors indicated they made many useful contacts for the future. With over 50 premiers among the 300-plus vessels, the HISWA Amsterdam in-water Boat Show 2015 offered plenty of choice. As true watersport enthusiasts are not afraid of a little stormy weather, exhibitors and visitors alike had plenty of time to exchange information.
Watersports on the IJ
Volvo Ocean Race sailor Carolijn Brouwer from Team SCA opened the boat show in spectacular fashion on Tuesday 1 September by flyboarding through the air. Despite the rain and wind over 500 school children were introduced to various watersports, and visitors of all ages participated in clinics, practical lessons and sea trials. They also enjoyed demonstrations of adventurous watersports such as Aqua Jumping and Hoverboarding. With ten unique vessels, the Boats with a Story Pavilion was one of the most popular features of the exhibition
‘Red Trousers Day’ and ‘Pea Soup Day’
Thursday 3 September marked Red Trousers Day at the HISWA Amsterdam in-water Boat Show, and exhibitors and visitors alike enthusiastically showed up in their best red pair. With red trousers being recognised as a popular clothing item in the watersport sector, the concept was well-received and a new tradition may have been started. The weather was so terrible on the Friday that the organisers spontaneously named it ‘Pea Soup Day’ and distributed bowls of typically Dutch erwtensoep to keep spirits high among exhibitors.
